The Mayson Hotel
Glenbrier Construction managed an exciting restoration project which entailed the redevelopment of No.81 and No.82 North Wall Quay. Both buildings, Grade A, listed buildings were in a dilapidated condition and had not been used in over two decades. No.81 was to retain a public house on the ground floor, resulting in changes to the existing structure and restoring the original features. No.82 is one of the few remaining warehouse structures on the north quays and presented a rare opportunity to establish this forgotten building as a new Dublin landmark.
The 45,000 square feet new project features 94 stylish bedrooms and suites across seven stories (2 basement floors and six above ground). It houses exclusive bars and restaurants including Elephant & Castle and Ryeleigh’s Rooftop Grill, a gym, an event space and an outdoor courtyard and is now one of the trendiest and busiest hotels in the city. This project was completed with a strong emphasis on heritage and restoration and protecting structures as well as the building of the brand new seven story structure.
The double story basement presented challenges in so far as it was constructed completely inside the No.82 existing brick façade structural footprint. Situated along the River Liffey, this area was tidal with the water table reaching almost ground level. During the basement construction, the area was held free of water by a secant interlocking piled wall. The superstructure was constructed of a steel frame building, metal deck flooring, concrete screeds and insitu concrete stair and lift cores to provide vertical stability of the building.
